New Zealand Self Drive Tour operator Overland Journeys have just completed another season of adventure driving tours through the regions of South America, China, Russia, Mongolia and Eastern Europe.
While ‘on tour,’ and with future development of yet more exciting tours to be offered for 2017 in mind, director of Overland Journeys (a division of Rally Tours NZ Ltd) Greg Paul headed off to explore the remote North East corner of the Russian continent.
The challenge was to drive the infamous “Road of Bones” to Magadan, a drive to perhaps the remotest city on the globe made famous by high profile motorcycle riders Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman who documented their ride in 2005 in a top-selling video and DVD, Long Way Round.
Overland Journey’s has been under some pressure by participants of previous Trans-Siberian expeditions to put together a jaunt to Magadan via the Road of Bones for some years, however, as we found out, no amount of research, Googling or imagination does the intrepid road journey to Magadan justice.
The bonus of having now conquered the Road of Bones is that we can add it and Magadan to the list of exciting destinations achievable by clients on our self-drive tours.
Greg and the faithful Land Cruisers are now off to South America just before Christmas to follow The Dakar Rally.
Next year’s menu of trips includes an 81-day Vladivostok-to-London Silk Road tour via Mongolia, Central Asia and the Ukraine.
Overland Journeys also has a group leaving Singapore and heading up through to Thailand and into Myanmar, the latter the “hot” new destination for self-drive trips.
This tour then continues through China, Mongolia, into Russia and up to Magadan where it will meet a third, 22-day, tour departing for Magadan from Vladivostok.
