Smittybilt
From 1950s America, the home of recreational off-roading, all the way to 2021 Godzone: Smittybilt has built a global reputation as one of the original accessory brands.
Being one of the original four-wheel drive enthusiasts, Basil ‘Smitty’ Smith set out to develop four-wheel drive equipment for pickups – utes in Kiwispeak – and small SUVs.
The US scene in those days revolved around the emerging use of old Jeeps for off-road driving. Most of these were ex-military or closely related to the olive green workhorses of the day.
In 1956, Smitty started a small machine shop in his garage, called Rock-ett Products. Over the years, Smitty’s son Tom came aboard and worked at Rockett until the “Smittybilt” brand was born. Having been involved in the four-wheel drive world all his life, Tom Smith created new and innovative product ideas as Chevy and Ford joined the scene. The company was geared towards the growing off-road aftermarket industry.
Smittybilt launched the original “Nerf Bar” side step and tubular front and rear bumpers for Jeeps.
Today Smittybilt Inc. proudly supplies thousands of active dealers and distributors worldwide with innovative ute and SUV accessories. Factor 55
Factor 55 products are designed and manufactured using state of the art technologies. Products are designed using SolidWorks CAD systems and stress analysed using COSMOS Finite Element Simulation software. The results enable the company to optimise a design concept by adding or removing material or changing material properties where necessary.
These theoretical results are then tested and validated using destructive testing at prototype level in a test and measurement facility that is also certified for U.S National Defense Department rigging and hoist testing.
