We video review the all-new 2021 Honda CR-V.

The Honda CR-V is a very stable part of the automotive landscape in New Zealand, with a 23-year history shoring up the 2021 models and a growing number of happy Honda owners voting with their chequebooks.

It’s fair to say Honda has managed to retain the CR-V’s popularity throughout two decades and a bit by just adding a few little peaks and tweaks each time while retaining all that is great about the model; and that’s not an easy trick.

With this CR-V incarnation we are seeing a lot of range rationalisation, making it easier for buyers to find the right Honda for them. The engine is no standard across the range and it’s a gem – a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol with VTEC (variable cam technology) brings the CR-V’s power and torque outputs up to 140kW and 240Nm respectively, allowing the 5 or 7 seat models to return 7.3 litres per 100km if a 2WD model or 7.4 litres per 100 for AWD versions.

As well, Honda has added many well-considered technological additions to improve the CR-V. Some of these are worth shouting about. The active noise cancelling in the cabin for example, which makes for a supremely serene ride. The suspension has seen some enhancement too, especially in the Sport Premium model, and then there is the exterior redesign, which has seen subtle but large improvements, but still retain the unmistakeable shape which characterises the CR-V.

A new hands-free electric tailgate serves as a convenience feature, as does the in-built Garmin Navigation app which displays mapping on the 7-inch colour touchscreen along with the reversing and Lanewatch side monitoring camera systems.

Safety is a paramount consideration for any automaker and the Honda Sensing Active Safety Technology suite covers pretty much all the bases, so how has Honda made it better? By making it standard across all grades of the CR-V, meaning no matter which CR-V you choose, you won’t need to choose how safe you’re going to be. That’s the new CR-V: no compromising.
