Ineos reveals Quartermaster ute

News and General

Promised, and delivered: Ineos has shown the ute version of its Grenadier 4WD.

It chose the Goodwood Festival of Speed to reveal a big, utilitarian, double-cab pickup truck version with a longer wheelbase than its Grenadier SUV.

It will be called the Quartermaster and is likely to compete with Jeep’s Gladiator.

The company spend five and a half years developing the first Grenadier. NZ4WD was the first Kiwi media outlet to experience the big SUV.

Now, the company has responded quickly to demand for a pickup.

The Quartermaster shares most of its componentry with the Grenadier SUV, but it’s just over 300mm longer overall. The bed is just over 1.5m long and 1.58m wide.

Payload is listed at 760kg and it will tow 3.5 tonnes. Both payload and towing numbers match those of the Grenadier SUV. Flip the tailgate down and it will support 225kg. The pickup’s wellside bed has four tie-down rings.

The Quartermaster pickup shares BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with the SUV version. Diesel and petrol versions are available.

Both powertrains are mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic. A locking centre differential and a two-speed transfer case are standard, while locking front and rear diffs are optional.

It’s selling well in North America: more than 5000 U.S. and Canadian customers have put down deposits on the SUV.

INEOS also showed off a new hydrogen-powered concept version of the Grenadier SUV at Goodwood. It uses BMW Group’s latest 400-volt fuel cell architecture. While the concept had a large hood bulge to accommodate the vehicle’s fuel cell, a production version would have the same hood as the SUV.

While the world is transitioning to zero-emissions, INEOS is likely to continue to offer internal combustion engines for the foreseeable future. Though the company is committed to ‘decarbonising’, it also recognises that its market is global and not every country in the world has the same push toward electric vehicles
